Guy Ritchie is the creator of the action comedy TV show The Gentlemen, which is available on Netflix. It is a spin-off of the same-titled Ritchie movie from 2019. “The Gentlemen” (Season 1) picks up the spirit of the film, offering a comedic take on the British criminal underworld with a twist: a posh aristocrat named Edward Horniman (Theo James) inherits a stately estate, only to discover it’s housing a thriving marijuana operation run by Mickey Pearson (replaced by Giancarlo Esposito in the series).

From Peacekeeping to Pot Baron?
Eddie, a former UN peacekeeping officer, is about as far removed from the drug trade as one can get. Thrusting into this unexpected situation, Edward Horniman must navigate a world of ruthless gangsters, cunning negotiators, and his own dysfunctional family. His cocaine-addicted brother Freddy (Daniel Ings) adds a layer of chaos, while their formidable mother, Lady Sabrina Horniman (Joely Richardson), provides a dose of dry wit.
A Cast of Colorful Characters
Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) is another standout. As the de facto leader of the drug syndicate, while Mickey is imprisoned, she’s a formidable force. Susie is sharp, calculating, and fiercely protective of her business. Adding to the mix is Sticky Pete (Joshua McGuire), a conman who sets his sights on Freddy, and Geoff Seacombe (Vinnie Jones), the estate’s gruff but loyal groundskeeper.
Ritchie’s Signature Style
Ritchie’s signature style is all over “The Gentlemen.” The series is fast-paced, with sharp dialogue, non-linear storytelling, and bursts of violence. The soundtrack combines classic rock and contemporary hip-hop, perfectly complementing the on-screen action.

Clash of Cultures
The show’s humor comes from the clash of Eddie’s aristocratic background with the gritty world of drug dealing. Eddie’s attempts to negotiate with Mickey’s crew or assert his authority over the estate lead to hilarious situations. The series also explores the complexities of class and privilege in Britain.
Is it a worthy successor to the film?
While the series lacks the star power of the film’s ensemble cast, Theo James holds his own as Eddie. The supporting cast delivers strong performances, particularly Scodelario and Ings
A Weed-Filled Future?
With its cliffhanger ending, “The Gentlemen” (Season 1) leaves the door open for a second season. Whether Eddie can navigate the treacherous world he’s inherited and find a way to co-exist with Mickey’s crew remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure: if there’s a season two, it will be a wild ride.
